Chapter 17
Law and Order
Things were pretty quiet in “the ’Ville” for the next few days. With Pumpkin deceased, his Blood set was pretty much defunct now that the leader of the gang was gone. John-John, the thief, was dead and once again kids were comfortable with riding their bikes through the courtyards of the projects. Senior citizens could cash their Social Security checks without having to worry about being robbed. The rapist, Jerrod Timmons, who was basically nameless until his untimely death, was gone forever without fanfare. The women of Brownsville were left to breathe easy for the time being until the next up-and-coming pervert decided he wanted to attack. It was a harsh reality, but fortunately the sign of the times prepared the people of Brownsville for the worst.
Poet was taken in for questioning in the murder of Terrence “Pumpkin” Watts. Poet was able to maintain his composure in front of the detectives, staring them in the eyes when he answered their questions, and made sure that he didn’t fidget or stumble over one word. After watching shows like CSI, Law & Order, and The First 48, Poet was able to keep a straight face.
Poet was unable to lie about the argument between him and Pumpkin because there had been too many witnesses. But he was able to provide the detectives with a solid alibi. He simply told them that he was at Mekhi s house on the night of the killing.
The interrogation went on between Poet and homicide detectives Hopewell and Mickens for at least three hours. There was no page left unturned and Poet couldn’t wait for the whole process to be over. He wasn’t nervous about being questioned by the detectives—he just didn’t want to end up in jail.
“Well, Mr. Washington, we can see that you have never been arrested. What are you doing with yourself these days? Are you gainfully employed?”
“Look, Detective, I didn’t kill Pumpkin, okay? Now why do you wanna question me about anything else? Poet asked. “I done already told you where I was the night that he was killed. Why do you wanna know where I work and all that?”
Detective Hopewell looked at Mickens and smirked. “Yeah, you’re a pretty clever guy, Poet. Just to let you know, this is still going to be an open case and you’re a person of interest, so don’t leave town.”
When Poet walked out of the precinct after the extensive interrogation, he thought about the warning that Detective Hopewell had given him: “don’t leave town.” Poet smiled and mocked the burly detective as he walked to his car.
“Don’t leave town,” Poet said. “What the fuck is he talkin’ about? Fuck him and fuck Pumpkin too.”
Poet got into his car and pulled off. He didn’t think that he should be questioned about anything, let alone a murder. Pumpkin, along with the others, was a nuisance to the community and they had to go. If anything, Poet felt that he should be getting rewarded for his outstanding work.
